Japan with kids done right, the cultural depth (Fushimi Inari, Senso-ji, Arashiyama bamboo grove) plus the Disneyland Tokyo + Universal Studios Osaka peaks the kids actually want, paced so 8–14-year-olds aren't bored at temples or wiped at theme parks. Tokyo 4N (Disneyland full day + teamLab + Asakusa + Pokemon Cafe), Hakone 1N (kid-friendly ryokan with private bath, Lake Ashi pirate ship), Kyoto 2N (Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama monkey park, kimono try-on), Osaka 1N (Universal Studios with Express Pass 4 + Dotonbori). Veg Indian-friendly meals identified at every dinner stop, including a Saffron-style Indian restaurant in Tokyo and a Ganesh in Kyoto for picky eaters. Suica IC cards for kids ages 6+ pre-loaded, stroller / luggage forwarding sorted, family-room configurations confirmed.
Tokyo Disneyland full day with Premier Access for 5 main attractions, Disney Premier Access skips the typical 90-min queues for Pirates, Big Thunder, Splash, Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion (this is the trip-saver for kids' patience)
teamLab Planets immersive water-and-mirror digital art, kids love the barefoot rooms (Forest of Resonating Lamps, Floating Flower Garden); 90 min, kid-tested no scary moments
Pokemon Cafe Shibuya pre-booked 31 days out, the only way to get in, Pikachu pancake course, family group photo with Pikachu statue
Asakusa Senso-ji + rickshaw ride for the kids, traditional dress-up photo opportunity at Nakamise street
Arashiyama monkey park (Iwatayama), ~120 wild Japanese macaques, kids feed them apples through the cage at the summit (8-year-old favourite)
Fushimi Inari Taisha at 6:30am, thousands of torii gates without crowds, half-circuit to Yotsutsuji is doable for 8+ year-olds
Universal Studios Japan with Express Pass 4, Super Nintendo World Mario Kart, Hogwarts Castle ride, Spider-Man, Demon Slayer 4D (skip 90-min queues)
Hakone ryokan with kid-friendly futon room + private cedar bath + kid-portion kaiseki, Lake Ashi pirate ship cruise + ropeway to Owakudani sulphur valley (black eggs +7 years)
Kimono / yukata family photo session in Higashiyama, dad gets the formal kimono he didn't know he wanted

9-day plan with pace, stay, transfers and meals on each day. Swap, slow down, or add anything, every day is editable before you pay.
Mini-coach pickup at Narita / Haneda, family transfer to Hilton Tokyo Bay (~75 min). Disney character welcome amenities for kids on arrival, family room with twin doubles + sitting area; ~2-hour rest. 4pm Yamanote line to Asakusa, Senso-ji Temple, Nakamise shopping street (the kid-favourite zone for melonpan, dango, cute capsule toys). Rickshaw ride for kids, 15-min route around Senso-ji with the puller running on bamboo legs (kids love this, dads laugh). 7pm dinner at Saffron Akihabara, Indian restaurant near Akihabara, veg / chicken curry kids will actually eat. Walk back to hotel by 9pm.
Breakfast at hotel. 8am free Disneyland shuttle (2 min), we get there at park opening (8:30am). Strategy: Pirates of the Caribbean and Big Thunder Mountain first (use Premier Access for Big Thunder), then Splash Mountain. Lunch at Plaza Restaurant or Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall (kid-friendly menus). Afternoon: Space Mountain (Premier Access), Haunted Mansion (Premier Access), Fantasyland's small attractions for younger kids. Electrical Parade Dreamlights at 7:30pm (the night-time parade is the highlight, kids in tears, parents pretending not to be). Stay till park close at 10pm if energy holds, otherwise we shuttle back at 8pm.
Breakfast at hotel. 11am Pokemon Cafe Shibuya group block (booked 31 days ahead), Pikachu pancake course, themed drinks, family photo with the Pikachu statue. Lunch at Pokemon Cafe. 2pm Yurikamome line to Toyosu, teamLab Planets timed entry (90 min, barefoot, water rooms, mirror rooms; kids consistently rate it as their favourite museum experience). 5pm to Tokyo SkyTree, 350m Tembo Deck timed entry, Tokyo dusk panorama. Dinner at Tsukiji Outer Market or upgrade to Sushi Zanmai. Mini-coach back to Hilton.
Slow breakfast at hotel. Free morning, we recommend Sony ExploraScience museum at Odaiba (interactive, kid-friendly free entry) or Mori Art Museum at Roppongi (better for 12+). Lunch at Aki Cafe in Aoyama (organic + Indian-friendly + curry option). 2pm to Akihabara, Yodobashi Akiba (10 floors of electronics + toys + manga + figures, the camera floor is hyper for parents but kids love the toy floor). 5pm Yamanote to Shibuya, Hachiko statue, Shibuya Crossing photo, 5:30pm Shibuya Sky observation deck timed entry at golden hour. Dinner at Ichiran Shibuya (single-person ramen booth, fun for kids, surprisingly good for picky eaters).
Breakfast 8am, check out. Shinkansen to Odawara (35 min, kids love the train). Hakone Tozan Railway switchback up the mountain (3 stops where the train reverses direction, kids think this is hilarious). Hakone Open-Air Museum (kid-friendly: 200+ Picasso pieces, sculpture park, climbing structures designed by Niki de Saint Phalle). Lake Ashi pirate ship cruise (Mt Fuji visible if clear). Owakudani sulphur valley ropeway, black eggs from the volcanic spring (kids' favourite, +7 years to your life). 4pm check-in at Hakone Sengokuhara Prince family room. Yukata change, private cedar bath bookable for family use. 6:30pm kid-portion kaiseki dinner served in family room (kids get smaller portions, less alarming flavours like sashimi swapped for chicken karaage). Sleep on futon spread on tatami.
Mt Fuji sunrise from family-room window if visible. Ryokan breakfast (Japanese set). Shinkansen Nozomi to Kyoto (2h 5m). Hotel Granvia Kyoto, family room above the station; drop bags. Lunch at Cube on the 11th floor of Kyoto Station building (300+ shops, kids choose). 2pm to a kimono / yukata atelier in Higashiyama, family of 4 dresses up (dad gets the formal black kimono, kids in cute yukata). Photographer's 1-hour session at Kodai-ji and the Yasaka Pagoda backdrop. Tea + wagashi sweet break at Tsujiri Honten (matcha ice cream for kids). 5pm change back, dinner at Ganesh Indian Restaurant in central Kyoto (veg + chicken kids will eat). Walk through Gion at dusk, possible geiko/maiko spotting around 6–7pm.
Pre-dawn 5:30am train to Inari, Fushimi Inari Taisha thousands of torii gates with no other tourists. Half-circuit to Yotsutsuji for the city view (~1 hour, doable for 8+ year-olds). Back at hotel by 9am for breakfast. 11am bus to Arashiyama, Tenryu-ji Temple gardens, then Iwatayama Monkey Park (15-minute hike up, ~120 wild Japanese macaques, kids feed them apples through the cage at the summit). Lunch at Shoraian, yudofu (boiled tofu) set meal. 2pm Arashiyama bamboo grove walk + Togetsukyo Bridge (you'll walk across the bridge that is in every Japanese-set anime). 4pm rickshaw ride for kids back to the station. Free evening, dinner at Kichi Kichi (Mr Motokichi's omurice show, the kids will remember this dinner forever, the chef makes a show of cracking the omelette over rice).
Breakfast 7am, check out. Shinkansen to Osaka (15 min). Hotel Hankyu Respire above Umeda Station, drop bags. JR loop to Universal City Station, Universal Studios Japan with Express Pass 4 (covers Super Nintendo World Mario Kart, Hogwarts Castle ride, Spider-Man, Demon Slayer 4D, the queues without Express Pass are 90+ min for each). Strategy: Super Nintendo World first thing, then Hogwarts before lunch. Lunch at Three Broomsticks at Hogsmeade (Butterbeer is fake-alcohol but kids think it's cool). Afternoon: Spider-Man, Demon Slayer 4D, the parade. 7pm to Dotonbori for the family food walk, takoyaki at Wanaka, okonomiyaki at Mizuno, Kura Sushi conveyor belt for kids' choice (¥110/plate, kids order 8 plates without prompting). Glico Running Man neon photo at Ebisu Bridge for the family photo.
Breakfast at hotel. Late check-out 12pm. Last family lunch at Sushi Yura on Umeda (conveyor + made-to-order, kids' menu). Limousine Bus to Kansai (KIX), 65 min. Pikachu plushie + senbei box for each kid handed at airport (TAT family-trip gift). Departure.

Sweet spot is 8–14, old enough to walk 12,000 steps without complaining, young enough to lose their minds at Disneyland. We've also run it for 6–7-year-olds with extra rest blocks (we add a Day 4 morning at the hotel pool instead of Sony ExploraScience). For under-6, the pacing is too packed; for 15+ teens, the Pokemon Cafe gets less mandatory and we'd shift to a couple-style itinerary with a teen-friendly Akihabara day. Tell us ages at booking and we re-sequence.
Without our Express Pass / Premier Access add-ons, expect 60–120 minute queues for big rides at both parks. With them, it's 5–15 min for the 4–5 main attractions covered. Side rides (smaller attractions) still queue 20–40 min. Total queue time on park days: with passes ~2 hours, without ~5 hours. The pass cost is included in the package and is the difference between kids being thrilled vs kids melting down.

Standard hotel check-in is 1.30 PM and check-out 10 AM. For questions specific to your booking, message your planner.
Yes, we pick a ryokan with family rooms (futon sleeping for 4 in one room) and kid-portion kaiseki, which most ryokans don't offer. The private cedar bath is bookable as a family unit, so kids who aren't comfortable with public onsen culture have a private option. Black eggs from Owakudani are the kid-favourite stop of the trip. The ryokan night is one of the experiences that turns the trip into something kids talk about back at school.
Tokyo and Kyoto have functioning Indian restaurants we book for at least 2 dinners each (Saffron Akihabara, Ganesh Kyoto, Khazana Roppongi). Pokemon Cafe has vegetarian pancake options. Pizza, pasta, fries, ice cream, and Coca-Cola are everywhere, picky eaters won't starve. We add veg-friendly notes to all hotel breakfasts. For Jain (no onion/garlic), we'd recommend our self-cook service apartment add-on.
May or October is ideal, weather is great, kids' school holidays line up. April is sakura peak but accommodation is 30–40% pricier and Disneyland is at peak crowd density. June–July is rainy season; August is hot/humid/typhoon-prone. November–December is fine but cold for kids in school uniforms. December has Christmas illuminations and Tokyo Disneyland's Christmas overlay which kids love.
Yamato Takkyubin (the courier service) sends bags hotel-to-hotel for ~¥2,000 per bag. We arrange this on Day 5 from Tokyo → Kyoto so you only carry overnight essentials on the Hakone day. Bags arrive at Hotel Granvia Kyoto by 4pm next day. Same on Day 8 from Kyoto → Osaka. This is one of those Japan logistics details that makes the trip 70% less stressful with kids.
