Cloud-cover statistics: Apr-May has 65-70% clear morning probability. Sep-Nov has the highest at 75-80%. Dec-Feb is excellent (above 80%) but bone-cold (-2 to 4°C). Jul-Aug we recommend you skip Tiger Hill; the haze is solid. We share live cloud-cover forecasts the night before via WhatsApp.
It's a 2-hour steam-train loop on a narrow gauge with gentle curves — noticeably less rocky than a road. We carry ginger candies and hand-fans in the kit. If anyone has severe motion-sickness, we substitute the Toy Train Museum at Ghum (15 min) and the road-trip to Batasia loop instead, with no price difference.
Mirik is 50 km / 2 hours each way, doable on Day 2 if you're willing to skip Padmaja Naidu Zoo and HMI. We pre-book a Mirik boat-ride and lunch at the lake-side. Add ₹4,500 per couple for the extension. Honest opinion: only do this if you've already seen the zoo (skipping the red panda loses a Darjeeling signature).
Layers, always. Tiger Hill sunrise is 0-8°C even in summer; Mall Road afternoons are 18-24°C in May, 12-18°C in October. Always carry a windbreaker for the Joy Ride open-window stretches. We send a destination-specific packing PDF 7 days before arrival.
Yes — 1st-class diesel-or-steam Joy Ride for both of you, advance-booked 21 days before arrival via the IRCTC partner channel. Steam tickets are limited; we book the steam slot when available and confirm 14 days before. If steam can't be confirmed, we book diesel and include a ₹500 voucher per couple at Glenary's as compensation.
