Day-by-day Itinerary
Early 5am departure from Manali. Cross Rohtang Pass (3,978m) — weather dependent, carry permits. Through Gramphu and Batal. Climb to Kunzum Pass (4,551m) for first views of the lunar Spiti landscape. Descend to Kaza (3,800m). Check in guesthouse. Rest and acclimatize. Evening at Kaza market — momos and thukpa for dinner.
Morning drive to Key (Ki) Monastery (4,166m) — the valley's most iconic gompa with 300 monks and sweeping 360° views. Meet the monks, see the ancient frescoes and thangkas. Drive to Kibber (4,270m), one of the world's highest villages reachable by road. Chicham Bridge — peer 150m down into the gorge. Back to Kaza for local dhaba dinner.
Hikkim (4,440m): Send a postcard from the world's highest post office (PIN: 172114) — they'll stamp your passport too. Langza (4,400m): Search for ammonite fossils in the hillside scree — these 50-million-year-old sea creature fossils are everywhere. Giant Maitreya Buddha statue. Komic (4,513m): Asia's highest motor-road village, with Tangyud Monastery perched at the top. Back to Kaza overnight.
Drive through Pin Valley — the only cold desert wildlife sanctuary in India. Mud Village (3,800m) is the main settlement. The valley is prime snow leopard territory (winter sightings, rare in summer). Hike along the Pin River. Spot Himalayan ibex on the ridges above. Return Kaza for final night.
Drive to Dhankar (3,890m). Dhankar Gompa sits on a crumbling cliff 300m above the Spiti-Pin river confluence — one of the most dramatic monastery locations in the Himalayas. Morning light is best for photography. Optional 2-hour trek to Dhankar Lake (4,100m) — high-altitude turquoise gem. Overnight Dhankar guesthouse.
Visit Tabo Monastery (996 AD) — established by Rinchen Zangpo, the 'Great Translator'. Called the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas' for its extraordinary murals, clay sculptures and cave meditation cells. The monks still study ancient manuscripts here. Drive through Kinnaur Valley — apple orchards, Tibetan-style villages, and the raging Sutlej below. Arrive Reckong Peo overnight.
Descend through the Sutlej gorge — one of the deepest in India. Pass Nathpa Jhakri dam (India's largest hydro project). Through Rampur and Narkanda. Arrive Shimla by evening. Trip ends — trains and buses to Delhi available. Your Spiti circuit is complete.
— End of trip —
Budget guesthouses run by Spitian families — think dal, rice, and thukpa cooked fresh, shared bathrooms with hot bucket water, and conversations with monks and farmers. The most authentic way to experience Spiti.
