Day-by-day Itinerary
Arrive Hanoi Noi Bai airport. Transfer to Old Quarter hotel (45 min). Check in and freshen up. Evening walk to Hoan Kiem Lake — the spiritual heart of Hanoi, surrounded by pagodas and weeping willows. Visit Ngoc Son Temple on a tiny island connected by a red bridge. Try Vietnam's famous egg coffee (ca phe trung) at Cafe Giang, a tiny cafe unchanged since 1946. Light dinner at Old Quarter restaurant.
Morning: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Museum (closed Mondays). One Pillar Pagoda (built 1049 AD). Temple of Literature (Vietnam's first university, 1070 AD). Afternoon: Hoan Kiem Lake area, Dong Xuan Market, 36 Streets of the Old Quarter — each street historically sold a different craft (paper street, tin street, silk street). Street food tour: banh mi (Vietnamese baguette), bun cha (grilled pork noodles), fresh spring rolls. Evening: Thang Long Water Puppet Show at 6pm — a 1,000-year-old art form performed in a pool. Dinner at Cha Ca La Vong — Hanoi's most iconic restaurant (turmeric fish dish, cooking at the table, same recipe since 1871).
9am departure from Hanoi hotel. 4-hour drive to Ha Long Bay through the Red River Delta flatlands. Arrive Tuan Chau Marina by 12:30pm. Board your junk boat — wooden floors, lacquered walls, private cabin. Welcome cocktail on deck as the boat pulls away from the marina. Lunch on board while the limestone karsts begin to appear. Arrive cruise zone by 3pm: kayaking session through Luon Cave into a hidden lagoon surrounded by karsts (1 hour). 5pm: floating fishing village visit — families who have lived on the water for generations. Sundowners on deck. Fresh seafood dinner (crab, prawn, squid, fish — all caught that day). Night: squid fishing from the boat with bamboo rods and a light. The bay at night is completely silent.
6am: Tai Chi on the sundeck as mist lifts from the karsts — one of those mornings that stays with you. Breakfast on board. 9am: Visit Hang Sung Sot (Surprise Cave) — a vast 3-chamber cave with stalactite formations that glow amber and gold in the lighting. 11am: Swim stop at a private beach between karsts. 12:30pm: Ha Long Bay cooking class on deck — learn to make fresh spring rolls and Vietnamese dipping sauce. Brunch. 2pm: Boat returns to marina. Transfer back to Hanoi (4hrs). Arrive Hanoi by 7pm. Farewell dinner at your choice of restaurant.
Free morning — sleep in, walk to the lake, pick up last-minute gifts (Hanoi silk, lacquerware, Vietnamese coffee). Depart Hanoi Noi Bai airport by afternoon or evening flight. Trip ends.
Arrive home with Ha Long Bay on your mind and egg coffee on your palate.
— End of trip —
Hanoi: La Siesta Premium or equivalent Old Quarter boutique hotel — heritage building, rooftop pool, walking distance to Hoan Kiem Lake. Ha Long Bay: Orchid Premium Cruises or similar — private cabin with window, en suite bathroom, wooden deck for sunsets.
