Day-by-day Itinerary
Arrive Leh. Transfer to hotel. Mandatory acclimatization rest. Brief evening walk to nearby cafe for kahwa tea. Early sleep — tomorrow starts an extraordinary journey.
Drive Leh-Kargil through the Indus valley. Stop at Lamayuru — the moonland landscape is extraordinary for couple photography. Golden light on the eroded mud formations in the afternoon. Arrive Kargil. Good hotel dinner.
The drive into Zanskar via Pensi La (4,401m) is one of the great Himalayan road journeys. Stop at Rangdum Monastery — completely isolated in a mountain bowl, surrounded by glaciers. Cross Pensi La with sweeping views of Zanskar peaks. Arrive Padum. First evening in the most remote corner of India you have ever visited.
5:30am departure for Karsha Gompa (20 minutes from Padum) to arrive for morning prayers at 6am — just the two of you and the monks. The butter lamp room, the chanting, the rising light on the valley — a profound and private experience. Return to Padum for late breakfast. Afternoon: rooftop reading, river walk, yoga session by the Stod River.
Drive to Cha. Trek 1.5 hours through the Lungnak gorge. Arrive Phugtal — the cliff monastery built around a 2,500-year-old cave. The guide has arranged for the caretaker monk to give a private tour of the inner caves and oldest prayer halls. Pack a special riverside picnic lunch prepared by your guesthouse. Return trek and drive back. Private rooftop dinner in Padum with candles and stargazing after.
Your private rafting boat on the Zanskar River, departing at 4pm to catch the canyon in afternoon gold light. The walls rise 1,000 feet above you. The water is glacial green. 1-hour float with your guide paddling — you simply sit together and look up. Riverside bonfire chai after. Final night in Padum.
Return journey via Pensi La. Stop at Sani Gompa — the ancient monastery most visitors miss. The drive back to Kargil is long but you carry something different home than when you arrived. Arrive Leh by evening. Trip ends.
— End of trip —
Clean private rooms with mountain views. Hosts arrange extra touches for couples — flower decoration at dinner, private rooftop seating for stargazing. Padum's best guesthouses have been briefed to treat this as a honeymoon experience.
