Common questions
Things travelers always ask.
What's the right age range for this family trip?
Sweet spot is 8–14, old enough to walk 12,000 steps without complaining, young enough to lose their minds at Disneyland. We've also run it for 6–7-year-olds with extra rest blocks (we add a Day 4 morning at the hotel pool instead of Sony ExploraScience). For under-6, the pacing is too packed; for 15+ teens, the Pokemon Cafe gets less mandatory and we'd shift to a couple-style itinerary with a teen-friendly Akihabara day. Tell us ages at booking and we re-sequence.
How much queueing actually happens at Disneyland and Universal?
Without our Express Pass / Premier Access add-ons, expect 60–120 minute queues for big rides at both parks. With them, it's 5–15 min for the 4–5 main attractions covered. Side rides (smaller attractions) still queue 20–40 min. Total queue time on park days: with passes ~2 hours, without ~5 hours. The pass cost is included in the package and is the difference between kids being thrilled vs kids melting down.
Is the Hakone ryokan night worth it for a family with young kids?
Yes, we pick a ryokan with family rooms (futon sleeping for 4 in one room) and kid-portion kaiseki, which most ryokans don't offer. The private cedar bath is bookable as a family unit, so kids who aren't comfortable with public onsen culture have a private option. Black eggs from Owakudani are the kid-favourite stop of the trip. The ryokan night is one of the experiences that turns the trip into something kids talk about back at school.
What if my kids are picky vegetarians or only eat Indian food?
Tokyo and Kyoto have functioning Indian restaurants we book for at least 2 dinners each (Saffron Akihabara, Ganesh Kyoto, Khazana Roppongi). Pokemon Cafe has vegetarian pancake options. Pizza, pasta, fries, ice cream, and Coca-Cola are everywhere, picky eaters won't starve. We add veg-friendly notes to all hotel breakfasts. For Jain (no onion/garlic), we'd recommend our self-cook service apartment add-on.
Best month for a family Japan trip with kids in school?
May or October is ideal, weather is great, kids' school holidays line up. April is sakura peak but accommodation is 30–40% pricier and Disneyland is at peak crowd density. June–July is rainy season; August is hot/humid/typhoon-prone. November–December is fine but cold for kids in school uniforms. December has Christmas illuminations and Tokyo Disneyland's Christmas overlay which kids love.
How does luggage forwarding work between Tokyo and Kyoto?
Yamato Takkyubin (the courier service) sends bags hotel-to-hotel for ~¥2,000 per bag. We arrange this on Day 5 from Tokyo → Kyoto so you only carry overnight essentials on the Hakone day. Bags arrive at Hotel Granvia Kyoto by 4pm next day. Same on Day 8 from Kyoto → Osaka. This is one of those Japan logistics details that makes the trip 70% less stressful with kids.

Jan:Cold (2–9°C), short daylight, kids in school holidays will love Disneyland Christmas overlay extension till early Jan
Feb:Cold but plum blossom in Kyoto, Disneyland less crowded
Mar:Late month sakura begins; Indian school summer holidays not yet started
Apr:Cherry blossom peak, incredible but Disneyland 90+ min queues even with Premier Access; book 6 months ahead
May:Excellent for families, Indian school holidays start, weather mild, after Golden Week (Apr 29–May 5) crowds normalise
Jun:Rainy season starts mid-month, daily rain disrupts theme park days; first half OK
Jul:Hot, humid, typhoon-prone; Indian school summer holidays peak but weather works against you
Sep:Typhoon season tail, cooler late month, Indian school break ending
Oct:Excellent, 18‐25°C, dry, autumn colours starting, Indian Diwali week works
Nov:Autumn momiji peak in Arashiyama, family-photo perfect, fewer crowds than April
Dec:Cold but Tokyo Disneyland Christmas overlay (mid-Nov–early Jan) is amazing for kids
