Vietnam, Thailand and Bali are the three most searched international trips from India, and they suit very different travellers. Here is an honest comparison of cost, vibe and who each one is really for.

Vietnam, Thailand and Bali sit at the top of almost every Indian traveller's first international shortlist. They are close, affordable and easy to enter. But they are not interchangeable. Pick wrong and you get a fine trip in the wrong key. This guide compares the three honestly, on cost, character and the kind of traveller each one fits.
When you have decided, our destination hubs for Vietnam, Thailand and Bali have the packages ready.
Choose Bali for a romantic, villa centred, slow trip. Choose Thailand for the easiest, most varied first international trip with cities, beaches and nightlife. Choose Vietnam for the most culture and the best value, if you do not mind a faster pace and more moving around.
Bali: one island, slow pace, romance and wellness, villas and sunsets. Best for honeymooners and couples.
Thailand: cities plus islands, the most developed tourism, the easiest logistics, something for everyone. Best for first timers, families and groups.
Vietnam: a long country of distinct regions, deep history and dramatic landscapes, the lowest day to day cost. Best for culture lovers and active, curious travellers.
All three are excellent value from India, but they spend differently.
Vietnam is usually the lowest day to day cost. Food, local transport and stays are cheap, and the value for money is the headline. The catch is more internal travel, since the country is long, though cheap domestic flights soften that.
Thailand sits in the middle and is the most predictable. The tourist infrastructure is the most developed of the three, so you always find an option at your price point. Note the new entry fee and the proof of funds cash rule, which we cover in our Thailand trip cost guide.
Bali's base can be very affordable, but honeymoon Bali, the private pool villa version, costs more by design. It is the destination where your choices, especially the villa, move the budget the most. The full picture is in our Bali honeymoon cost guide.
Bali is the mood destination: rice terraces, temples, wellness, sunsets and villas. It rewards slowing down and staying put. It is the natural honeymoon pick.
Thailand is the variety destination: a buzzing city in Bangkok, island beaches in Phuket and Krabi, culture in Chiang Mai, and the easiest logistics of the three. It suits first timers and groups who want a bit of everything.
Vietnam is the discovery destination: deep history, distinct regional cultures, dramatic landscapes from Ha Long Bay to the central coast, and food that travellers rave about. It suits the curious traveller who likes to keep moving.
This is where the choice can be made for you by your dates. In the Indian summer, Bali and the central coast of Vietnam are in their dry, sunny season, which is why both shine for school holiday travel. Thailand works year round with November to February as the classic window. For the Vietnam summer routing, see our 7 day Vietnam itinerary. For Bali's dry season, see Bali in June, July and August.
All three are easy for Indian passport holders. Bali offers a visa on arrival paid at the airport. Vietnam uses a straightforward online e visa you apply for before travel. Thailand has kept short tourist stays simple through a visa exemption arrangement, though it has added a small tourist entry fee and can ask for proof of funds at immigration. None of these is a barrier, but Vietnam is the one that needs a little paperwork before you fly.
For a honeymoon or a slow romantic escape: Bali. For a first international trip, a family holiday, or a group wanting variety and easy logistics: Thailand. For the best value, the richest culture and an active pace: Vietnam.
You will not regret any of the three. But match the destination to your trip's purpose, romance, variety or discovery, and the right one becomes obvious. Tell a planner what you want the trip to feel like, and we will point you to the version of it that fits your budget.
For Indian travellers this often decides the trip, so it is worth being clear. All three are friendly to Indian palates, with plenty of flavour and spice, and all three have Indian restaurants in the main tourist hubs, which reassures families travelling with elders or fussy eaters. Bali and Thailand have the widest spread of dedicated Indian and vegetarian options, especially in the popular areas. Vietnamese food is lighter and herb forward, with excellent vegetarian dishes in the cities, though dedicated Indian restaurants are fewer outside the big centres. If pure vegetarian or Jain food is essential, tell your planner and we will choose stays and areas with reliable options. On ease, Thailand and Bali are the most relaxed for first time international families, while Vietnam rewards travellers happy to be a touch more adventurous.
The right trip length differs by destination. Bali works beautifully as a five to seven night trip, since its pleasure is in slowing down and staying put across two bases. Thailand suits six to eight nights, enough to pair Bangkok with one or two islands without rushing. Vietnam asks for a little more, seven nights for the north and centre and ideally ten or more to add the south, because the country is long and the regions are distinct. If you have only a short week, Bali and Thailand pack the most satisfying trip into the time. If you have ten days and a taste for variety, Vietnam gives you the most ground covered.
Which is cheaper, Vietnam, Thailand or Bali? Vietnam usually has the lowest day to day cost. Thailand is the most predictable across budgets. Bali's cost depends heavily on your villa choice.
Which is best for a honeymoon? Bali, for its private pool villas, wellness and romantic pace. Vietnam and Thailand suit couples who want more activity.
Which is the best first international trip from India? Thailand, for its easy entry, developed tourism and mix of cities, beaches and culture.
Which is easiest to enter for Indians? Bali with a visa on arrival and Thailand with a visa exemption are the simplest at the airport. Vietnam needs an e visa applied for online before you fly.
Which has the best food? All three are excellent, but Vietnam is the one travellers rave about most for its street food and regional specialities.
