How many days do I need in Varanasi?

Two full days give you a sunrise boat ride, the evening aarti, darshan at Kashi Vishwanath and a walk through the old city. Add a third day for Sarnath and a slower morning at Assi Ghat. If you plan to add Prayagraj or Ayodhya, allow four to six days in total, because each drive between them takes several hours.

When should I see the Ganga Aarti and take the boat ride?

The aarti at Dashashwamedh starts around sunset every evening, so its time shifts through the year. Arrive about 45 minutes early for a good spot on the steps, or watch it from a boat on the river, which we can arrange. Take the boat ride at sunrise. The light is soft, the ghats fill with bathers and prayers, and the river is at its calmest.

Can I visit Varanasi in the monsoon?

You can, but the river changes the trip. From roughly July to September the Ganga rises, water covers the lower steps of many ghats, and the local administration often stops boat rides when the current runs high. The aarti usually moves to a higher platform. If the river is a big part of why you are going, plan for October to March.

Is Varanasi suitable for elderly parents?

Yes, with some planning. The lanes are narrow and crowded, the ghats mean a lot of steps, and cars cannot reach the river. We choose a hotel that keeps the walking short, book a boat for the aarti so nobody has to stand in the crowd, and arrange an e-rickshaw for the temple approach where the lanes allow it. Can we combine Varanasi with Ayodhya and Prayagraj?

Yes, and it is the pilgrimage circuit we plan most often. A typical route starts in Ayodhya or Varanasi, takes in the Sangam at Prayagraj and sometimes adds Chitrakoot. The full circuit works well in four to six days by road. We set the order based on where your flight or train arrives so you never double back.

How should we behave at the cremation ghats?

Manikarnika and Harishchandra are working cremation grounds, and the families there are grieving. Watch quietly from a respectful distance, do not photograph the pyres, and ignore anyone who asks for money to show you around or for a wood donation. A guide we trust can explain the rituals without turning them into a show.
