Crafting your travel…A Ha Long Bay cruise costs ₹34,500 per person as a day trip, or ₹37,800 with a night on the boat, on Trust and Trip's live Vietnam prices with flights and visa extra. Book the overnight. And stop shopping for a Ha Long Bay trip on its own, because it is not a thing you can sensibly buy.
Because there is nothing there to come back to. Ha Long Bay is a two and a half to four hour road transfer from Hanoi, and our own listings disagree on which end of that range is realistic, which tells you something about the traffic. Nobody flies into Ha Long. You fly into Hanoi, you go out to the bay, and you come back.
So every price below is for a whole Vietnam trip that contains the bay, not for a boat ticket. When you search for Ha Long Bay travel packages, that is what you are going to be quoted, and comparing two of them on headline price alone will mislead you badly.

International flights and the Vietnam visa are excluded.

Yes, and it is the one upgrade on this trip we would argue for.
The honest version of the arithmetic first: ₹37,800 against ₹34,500 is about ₹3,300, but those are not the same trip. The cheaper one is a night longer and includes Da Nang and Ba Na Hills. The dearer one is shorter and stays north. So ₹3,300 is not the price of a night on a boat, and anyone telling you it is has not read the inclusions.
What you can take from it is the shape. Our shortest Hanoi-based trip with a cabin on the bay costs slightly more than our longest without one, and the thing it buys is the only part of Ha Long Bay that is hard to get any other way. The day boats work the same water on the same schedule, which means the bay you see between 11am and 3pm is a bay with a hundred other hulls in it. The overnight boats moor away from that. You get the evening, the early morning, and the part where the limestone stops being scenery and starts being quiet.
You are also buying dinner and breakfast on board, which on the ₹37,800 trip are included rather than a surcharge. That closes some of the gap that the headline number opens.
Probably not. Our Vietnam 5N/6D Couple, Hanoi and Ha Long Bay Escape at ₹55,000 puts two nights in a cruise cabin against three in a Hanoi Old Quarter boutique hotel, and it is a real option for a specific person: someone who wants to be on a boat, reading, for two days.
For most travellers the second night is where the trip stalls. The bay does not get more varied, the cabin does not get bigger, and you have committed a day of a short Vietnam trip to a vessel you cannot get off. If you have six nights in the country, that day is worth more in Hanoi or on a flight south. Book the second night because you want the boat, not because you want the bay.

Two things worth pushing on before you pay. Some of our Vietnam listings put GST and TCS outside the headline number and some do not, so ask which you are looking at rather than assuming. And do not take any visa rule you read on a listing page, ours included, as current. Vietnam has changed the terms for Indian passport holders more than once. Confirm it against the Vietnamese government's own e-visa portal in the week you book, not in the month you plan.
Sailings on Ha Long Bay get suspended in bad weather, and that is not a risk you can price away. What you can do is book a trip that already has somewhere else to be. Ninh Binh is the same limestone karst geology seen from a rowboat on a river instead of a bay, and it is inland, so it sails when the coast does not.
If your dates are fixed and your trip is short, that flexibility is worth more than a cabin upgrade.
Anyone with four nights or fewer in Vietnam who came for beaches. The bay costs you a full day minimum, two for an overnight, plus five to eight hours in a van. Spend that on Da Nang and Hoi An instead and you will have a better trip.
Anyone who gets seasick. The overnight boats are moored rather than under way for most of the night, but the transfer out and the tender to the caves are small-boat work.
And anyone travelling with a parent who struggles on stairs. Cruise cabins are reached by steep narrow companionways, and the cave excursions on these itineraries involve real climbs.
