This is the Kedarnath yatra for people who cannot walk 16km uphill, and it is overwhelmingly booked by families travelling with parents in their sixties and seventies. From Lucknow it runs as a road journey to Phata — around 650km, broken with a Haridwar or Rishikesh night — followed by a fifteen-minute flight over the Mandakini valley that lands within 500m of the Jyotirlinga.
Most yatris do a same-day return, which gives roughly ninety minutes at the temple complex including darshan. Some choose the overnight version to attend the evening aarti and the morning abhishek, which is a different experience entirely and worth the extra night if the group can manage the altitude. Two things decide whether this trip works: whether the operator slot is genuinely held, and what happens if the weather grounds the flight. We pre-block slots at Phata weeks ahead rather than relying on day-of availability, and the backup plan is written into your itinerary before you leave Lucknow rather than improvised at the helipad.
